Most families don't call me after one big event. They call after a dozen little things they noticed over months — and wish they had acted on sooner. After more than 10 years in caregiving, these are the signs I tell families in St. Charles and across the St. Louis metro to take seriously:
1. The house isn't kept up like it used to be. Piled-up mail, laundry that doesn't get done, a fridge with old food in it. When daily tasks start slipping, it's rarely laziness — it's usually energy, memory, or mobility.
2. Meals are being skipped — or replaced. Tea and toast for dinner, weight loss you can see, or the same few foods over and over. Good nutrition is what keeps strength up and falls down.
3. Personal care is changing. Bathing less often, wearing the same clothes for days, or trouble with buttons and zippers. These are hard for a parent to admit — watch gently, don't accuse.
4. Medicines are getting mixed up. Pills left in the bottle past when they should be gone, doses doubled, or a pill organizer nobody is keeping straight. Medication mistakes are one of the most common reasons seniors land in the hospital.
5. Bruises, bumps, or near-falls. A parent who is "just clumsy lately" may be falling and not telling you. Check for furniture they've started holding onto while they walk.
6. They're pulling back from people. Skipping church, family dinners, or phone calls they used to enjoy. Loneliness is a health risk all by itself — and often the first sign of depression or early memory trouble.
7. You are exhausted. If you are a son, daughter, or spouse doing the caring: your burnout counts as a sign too. Care that depends on one worn-out person isn't a plan — it's a countdown.
What to do next: You don't have to solve all of it at once. Start with one honest conversation, and one small support — a few hours of help a week with meals, personal care, companionship, and wellness and safety checks is enough for many families to breathe again.
